White is a popular colour. Clean, pure and easy on the eye. But, while white towels and sheets are popular among guests and owners, white decor and furnishings are less so amongst holiday cottage owners due to the envisaged cleaning and maintenance costs necessary to keep appearances fresh.
This hasn't deterred the owner of The Chestnuts and Culls Cottages in Oxfordshire who really has gone for the white look throughout. You must admit, it does look absolutely stunning. It works too. Both cottages are popular not just amongst guests, but, it would seem, amongst Tourism Award judges.
Chris, the owner of both the holiday cottages loves white. She says, "My friends and family tease me relentlessly about my white fetish, but I love the white on white look. It's also great in an old cottage because it gives an instantly contemporary look, everything goes with it, it makes any space feel fresh and you can mix and match anything with it."
Actually, look carefully at the photos and you'll appreciate that Chris has chosen very carefully, selecting things that look good in or on white, from furniture to artwork - consistency is crucial in design, right down to lighting.
With regard to cleaning - that doesn't appear to be a problem for Chris who says she has "two wonderful housekeepers who take care of all that - Linda and Louise."
For viewers. there is also the subliminal impact of the pictures which many feel tell far more truth than text. The spotless impression suggests that the owners are fastidious in their cleaning and presentation of the property for guests - a huge confidence boost when investing your holiday money on an unknown property.
As for Chris - well, the success story continues. She's currently creating a white garden at Culls Cottage. Hopefully she'll send us a photo at some point to share on this site.
